Watch JCVD - the initials for Jean Claude van Damme - It is AMAZING ! We all know van Damme as a player in cheesy action movies in which he demonstrates how far apart he can place each foot on a countertop. But he plays himself in this very wonderfully written, very well shot, very well edited movie - AND, surprise, surprise... the guy delivers a great performance. This is not your usual predictable Hollywood crap - it has twists, it plays with time (but very gently, and not in a confusing way), and it is aware that it is a movie, without being 'artsy'. It is one of the very best films I have seen in a long time. There is another one, which is a documentary called "Man on Wire"about a real high-wire daredevil who sneakily strung a wire between the top of Trade Towers in NYC and walked across, and sat on the cables .... very well done. And - this is not everyone's cup of tea, but I loved it - "Across The Universe", which uses Beatles songs to open a story line. Buy the DVD and watch the Features - very cool. outta here beedee

I want to see JCVD and man on a wire. I've been afraid to see across the universe, because if it were done badly I could find it very irritating. I'm glad to hear it's good.
The movie I liked most recently was Battle for Terra. It's animated. It's about "aliens" who live peacefully (though with a stifling order imposed by the elders). There is an adventurous heroine who is a hacker type person who builds machines and goes against the rules of the incurious elders. They then get invaded by humans who seek to terraform their planet after they blew up earth.
Before that I liked "Happy go lucky", which is a British movie about a woman who is relentlessly happy, who's life changes after her bicycle is stolen (which she finds hilarious). She meets a lot of grumpy and disturbed people and learns about the reasons behind their perspectives. They have it on netflix.
Before that I liked "Marlie and me", which is cute and sad. It's about a dog Marlie, from puppy until adult. But, I like almost any movie about dogs...
Watchmen was good.
The movie I'm most looking forward to is Ponyo, the new Studio Ghibli movie (they put out Mikyazaki's animated movies such as My neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away etc.).

I JUST watched JCVD last week - I'd heard the buzz about it and finally checked it out. It was a bit surreal at times but it was very entertaining.
And I watched part of Snow Angels a few days ago - Brian, it was great to see you on screen again!
P.S. Thanks to NetFlix... it rocks!

Yes, JCVD was fun - don't think I've enjoyed a Van Damme movie that much since Hard Target.
Recently saw Hunger, about IRA hunger strikes - not an easy film to watch, but interesting... hardly any dialogue, apart from one section in the middle, which is one continuous take for about 15 minutes...

I enjoyed snow angels, and when I was at a video store the other month, there was an entire shelf full of snow angels dvds. So, maybe it is doing well?
Movies I enjoyed recently:
"Food Inc.". About the American industrialization of food, and the death of American farming. If you are bipolar and hate "the left", then you will hate this. It's a documentary (i.e. the artist's perspective portrayed as objective, in the context of references to supposedly real factoids).
(Monsanto is more evil than his divine shadow)
"Up". About a guy who makes his house float to south america by attaching balloons to it.
"The middle of the world". About a family that rides bicycles across Brazil for their buyer, and the stuff that happens during their ride.

Ooh, you lucked out. I went one day, an hour early and the line was around the block. So I went and waited 2 and a half hours to be able to get a decent seat. They said it was only going to run for 90 days. Maybe they lied.
I ordered JCVD and man on a wire, on netflix. Hunger isn't available yet. The last movie I saw was Marebito, which was very interesting, but it's a Japanese horror movie, so I'm not sure if that would be your cup of tea, Shannan. It's low budget and weird, about an insane person who is attracted to the dark areas under Tokyo.

Saw Outlander recently. A spaceman crash lands on Earth in Viking times - unfortunately, a hungry alien is also onboard - basically, it's Predator meets Beowulf. It stars Jim Caviezel, and also has John Hurt and Ron Perlman (no strangers to aliens) - and shot in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, which means the eagle-eyed can spot some Lexxtras - including Amy Kerr (Desh in 791).
This was fun - a bit predictable in places, but an interesting alien, good design - shame it didn't get a wider release.

Pontypool - an unusual zombie film. Most of it takes place in a local radio station, where the staff are trying to make sense of reports coming in about disturbing behaviour around town. Low-budget, but good - interesting idea...
And it's got Lexx connections - starring Stephen McHattie (Moss) as the DJ, and directed by Bruce McDonald (Garden and Tunnels).
Also enjoyed Air Knob - short film about an air guitar duel between neighbours. Only 8 minutes long, but fun - and the sound editing was very good.

If this wasn't suggested yet, there is a movie I like called Do or Die, that came out in 2003.
It stars Nigel Bennett (Prince) as Ethan Grant and a villain. He's in charge of a pharmaceutical company that makes a treatment drug for the a disease that causes rapid aging. Also has Jeffrey Hirschfield (790) as Grant's aide. A good science fiction movie for my taste.

Went to see Moon
Sam Bell (played by Sam Rockwell) is the only human at a mining base on the moon. His only companion is Gerty, a robot (there's something quite unsettling about a robot with emoticons, and Kevin Spacey's voice).
Sam's three year contract is nearly up, and he should be going back home to Earth in a couple of weeks - but he's started seeing things...
This is slightly reminiscent of some other movies - at first I thought it was going to be a rip-off of Solaris, or 2001 - but it's neither of those. Silent Running, maybe... It's not quite perfect, and it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I found it very moving.
There's some nice model work - also CGI, but that's used to serve the story, rather than for its own sake. It makes a pleasant change to see a sci-fi movie that relies on story and acting, rather than things exploding.
I've liked Sam Rockwell as an actor since Lawn Dogs, and here he carries the film single-handled - he's virtually the only person onscreen for most of the time. In any other genre this would pretty much guarantee an Oscar nomination, but sci-fi is often overlooked...

Just been watching Dog Soldiers - a team of soldiers are sent to the Scottish highlands for a training exercise, only to find themselves up against werewolves. Has lots of army/horror movie cliches - but it also has a dark sense of humour - good gory fun.

Just recently watched Dog Soldiers, buying it after I read Goblin's review, and the gruesome effects are something I never seen in any werewolf movies I've watched. The movie is good, but not something I watch over and over again.

It's probably funnier if you're English... for example, "Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough!" is a traditional chant when picking a fight over here - though not usually used against werewolves ;D
Always fun watching horror movies at full moon...
