I hope everybody stays safe this labor day weekend. It is astounding the number of people I saw in the Government run liquor stores yesterday and today. I simply walked out - the line ups were way too much to deal with. There are always a lot of highway accidents on this weekend, and it is often the most deadly weekend of the year, and most accidents are the direct result of someone with too much booze in their systems. Please be careful if you are out there. You are all way too valuable to get beat up by a fool.

Hey Brian, and thanks for the message. Labor Day has come and gone. The last real holiday of summer. It seems most folks followed your advice and stayed safe and avoided all the drunks out there (except for that really loud obnoxious one that won't leave poor New Orleans alone). Except I don't think it was caution as much as frugality. But that makes my job so much easier, having the highway all to myself!
More time for all of you to watch those Lexx DVDs again!!
All the best, Sam

Labour day? lve not heard of this . . . what holiday? Good question. This is an american so called holiday. It originated well over 100 years ago to celebrate the working person with a day off. What is not clear in researching "holiday," at least in the USA context, is that Federal, and State sanctioned holidays, generally refer to days you can get paid without working. What good is a day off if you dont get paid? If you dont get paid, its not a real holiday. So in USA, big holidays are arbitrarily attached to the weekend, such that they result in 3 day weekends, with no loss in pay. Depending on who you work for, and if self imployed, mega nada. I think there are only 2 mega crazy 3 day holidays in USA, one is memorial day, the other is labor day. If you have to work, its wtf, but if you get paid its woohoo hit the highway and go crazy, hence the concern and warnings. For the most part, nobody has a clue of the meaning of any holiday, at least in USA. There are some holidays with no day off, like Easter (when Christ rises from the dead), and Halloween (when everybody else rises from the dead). Then there is Columbus day, when C Columbus discovered America. I dont think that is a paid day, not sure. Then any private company can give you any paid day for any reason. Actually i wouldnt mind seeing so called holidays all the time, commemorating events, just to help remember them. Everyday should be 100 or more holidays when you think about it. The only cool USA holiday is Thankgiving Day, which supposedly relates to the original European settlers in America, sharing with the natives, who are not "indians" but rather asian explorers who discoverd and settled here long ago. For whatever reason, at that time we are supposed to prepare turkey, sweet potato, and corn plus whatever.... (jello.LOL) So back to the topic. Labor day celebrates the working person, but not really, its all about 3 day weekend madness, working people be damned.

Well technically speaking, there is really NO holiday that everyone gets off. I've had jobs where I had to work on July 4th, Christmas, New Year's and Thanksgiving. The only ones that really 'count' are the ones the Government decides to let their staff off for, so they become the 'official' holidays.
Presidents Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Martin Luther King Day, July 4, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, Columbus Day and New Year's Day are all noticeable in the fact that if the banks are closed, so are the govt offices. I'm old enough to remember when we actually celebrated Washington and Lincoln's birthday being off, but they merged them into 'Presidents Day' instead.
Unfortunately not many religious holidays allow one to be off from work, except for Christmas Day. Easter always falls on a Sunday so regular working rules usually don't apply, but stores are still open. They don't close for Yom Kippur, Kwanza, Good Friday, or any other religious holiday unless the individual company celebrates them. It would be nice if everyone could have the same days off, but unfortunately, things still have to be open, gas stations, stores, cell phone companies, etc. so we take 'em where we find 'em.
Personally I think we should have a week between Christmas and New Years just to get the parties all attended to...
