Its the start of a new year!
Can someone keep me updated on any events happening in 2009.
I'm afraid here in Scotland we rarely have any conventions and would really like to make an effort this year to go to one.
Thanks

There are lots of folks in here who are experienced convention attendees (is there such a word ?). I am sure you'll get lots of advice. The best advice might be to go to the established ones ( they are most likely not to cancel at the last minute) book hotels well in advance, and be prepared to spend more money than a small government - OK, that last thing might be a small overstatement - but you will spend more than you anticipate. AND, it will be worth it !! brian

HA, Yes I would be expecting to spend a few pennies more than i should. Never been to a convention if there is one coming up with the lexx crew involved I will be there. Let me know.

In recently talking to BK (who has been the cast convention manager before) about conventions, one of the best things we could do as fans is email established conventions as Lexx fans to show our support for the cast and generate an interest with the people that run the conventions to have the cast there for an appearance.

Sure, Will gladly do my part. Could you give me a list of companies I should contact, perhaps ones that have accommodated the Lexx cast before?

Don't know of any upcoming cons with Lexx cast appearances, but here's a website which lists a lot of UK cons: www.scificons.co.ukAnd a fun little con this February - Redemption www.conventions.org.uk/redemption It was originally for Blake's 7/Babylon 5, but it's expanded to have a little bit of everything, so you can usually find someone who shares your interests.

xprince:
Conventions vary in size and content and it all depends on what you want to do. The bigger the convention, the less likely you will get to spend more time meeting your favorite celebrities, but there may be many more panels and after hour parties to attend.
If you like getting autographs be aware that most celebrities charge a fee, typically 20 to 30 dollars. I didn't realize at first that many celebs get a relatively small appearance fee from the conventions and usually have to pay their own travel, lodging and food expenses. So autographs and other merchandise can help them make up for those expenses.
I have seen a trend in the last year or 2 where some folks are charging more than $30 for autographs. Edward James Olmos, bless him, he's a great humanitarian and he's doing an awesome job on Battlestar Galactica (great fucking show, BTW!), but he was charging 60 dollars for autographs at DragonCon Atlanta last year. I don't know if he got all the money or if the convention got a cut (Brian, any idea about how that works?) but it was too much.
MegaCon Orlando is coming up on the last weekend of February. It's a nice mid-sized convention with TONS of hotels within walking distance. You should check it out... I go every year I can - it's a nice break from the cold weather too!
Hope the info was helpful!

Woah! That's a lot of money for a squiggle on a bit of paper! 60 Quid! I mean I love BSG but I wouldn't pay that. I understand that the artists need compensated for being there... But $60 is a whole day at work for us simple folks. haha.
I like the idea of a smaller one where you can meet the artists rather than wait in line to get a signature and then go. I probably wouldn't go to a con unless the artists there were people who I REALLY adore rather than just like. For example I would go to see the people from Lexx, Farscape, Firefly etc, But probably wouldn't travel to see BSG, Star Trek, Fringe. Even though I really like em.
So I would probably have to wait until the right convention reveals itself.

I met a few of the Firefly cast at DragonCon last September. Very nice folks, and they seemed to like that ther were still relative "newcomers" to the show like myself (I had only first watched the show on DVD almost 5 years after FOX network cancelled it).
Virginia Hey of Farscape is a very friendly and gorgeous woman who loves meeting fans.
And of course Lexx... Brian, Ellen Dubin, Pat Zentilli, Louise Wischermann, Rolf Kaines, Nigel Bennett, Lex Gigeroff, etc... it was great meeting all of those folks over the last few years!!

Sure, Will gladly do my part. Could you give me a list of companies I should contact, perhaps ones that have accommodated the Lexx cast before? I really liked Megacon in Orlando, Florida. I went in 2007, it was the second time I've met the Lexx cast. It's a pretty big one with alot of different Sci fi actors, anime and comics. I've only been to a couple of conventions the cast have been at, so not really a regular con goer, but I had fun at them as I went with real life friends that I've made through Lexx and met other lexx fans at conventions. As Brian says, lexxians are like one big family - maybe a dysfunctional one at times. ;-) But it was great meeting other fans and the cast and I can assure you they make you feel welcome. A little research on google will probably bring up a plethora of science fiction and comic cons.

Hey Jim! Virginia Hey is beautiful. The first night when my friends and I had arrived at the hotel, she was having dinner with the guy that played Scorpios and their convention manager and BK at the Carnavale bar/restaurant in the hotel. We kept on looking at her at first thinking she looked so much like Xenia, that we were wondering if Xenia had a sister at the convention.
Whom from the firefly cast did you get to meet? I didn't watch it when it aired, but a friend of mine sent me the DVD's and the Serenity movie, I ended up really liking the show.

Turns out it was Lani Tupu from Farscape LOL

Hey Jim! Virginia Hey is beautiful. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Whom from the firefly cast did you get to meet? Virginia was at DragonCon this past September and I'm telling you even though she's in her mid to late 50s she is still an absolutely stunning woman. I met her and got her autograph at MegaCon several years ago and she was a total sweetheart. Nathan Fillion, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin and Alan Tudyk were there. All super nice folks - too bad there wasn't much time to meet and chat. There were some pretty long lines and wait times to meet them and the Galactica folks (they were also very nice, BTW!), so it was good etiquette for fans to be polite and quick.

AND I think I should note that I haven't been to a convention yet that has been bad. Mind you, there have been some occasional bits, like the hotel room wasn't ready when I arrived, or the rare case of meeting a luke warm celebrity. And has anyone been to DragonCon amongst the endless masses of clueless people who just won't get out of your way in the dealers room?? LOL
