I hesitate to talk about so called politics, but since the topic of gun control came up, in relation (possibly) to Shannon's friend's death, I was wondering what you thought about Michael Moore's take on the issue of gun ownership, in bowling for columbine.
My interpretation of his opinion was that Canadian's have a lot of guns, but don't (or didn't) have the same level of gun related deaths. So, the problem is not an issue of gun control, but rather that in America, fear is heavily marketed by corporate media, and supposedly less so in Canadian corporate media.
Since you live in Canada, and if you've seen the movie, what do you think about that idea?

well i live in the UK andwe have a no gun policy unless its for hunting and then only certain types and u need a licence but gun based crime and deaths are on the rise, so perhaps, the issue should be, not gun control, but gun education, educating people to the effects harming another person has, both on the victims families and the shooters lives. just my pennys worth

Canadians own FAR fewer guns per capita than Americans. It is VERY difficult to buy a gun in Canada. The documents one has to provide and quite thorough. ALL guns must have a trigger lock on at ALL times, except when the thing is in use. Until just a few years ago, the police in Newfoundland did NOT carry guns, and when it was deemed necessary, they had to get special permission. Gun related crimes in Canada are no where near as frequent as in the USA. There is good reason why many good people are trying so very hard to get a lot more control of gun sales, and gun ownership, in America. The USA is the most heavily armed country on earth, and has more people in jail than any other country on earth, including China. Those of us who have American friends, worry about their safety, and their right to live without fear in their own country. And this s not a dig at the USA. It is an observation that Dwight D. Eisenhower was absolutely correct in the last speech he gave before leaving the office of President of the USA. Check it out. He warned against an armed nation. With love and worry, brian

I don't really have a fully worked out opinion. I don't think Americans have a right granted by the constitution to own guns in order to overthrow the government when it becomes tyrannical.
I don't think anyone needs to have an assault rifle. I think it's more reasonable that someone living outside of the city would have use for a gun. I have no problem with requiring registration and background checks. I have a problem with what a background check is starting to mean, in general.
But, what about the idea that Americans are more violent because of their media's terror campaign?

well the uk i think does well without the use of guns for people. and we get on pretty well without them. rather than arming people with guns to protect them from other people with guns, why not just take all the guns away?

why not just take all the guns away? Herein lies the problem... how do you take the guns away? ...from everyone? Even law abiding citizens? The old argument that some pro gun people in the US say is this: if you take guns away from us law abiding citizens, only criminals would have access to guns. Simplistic and perhaps a bit paranoid, yes, but not altogether false. And how exactly do you "take" a gun away from criminals, much less people who follow the law? Personally, I do not own a gun and I do not have the desire to own one at the moment, but... Varrtan, good point made... registration and background checks should be very thorough.
