The convention in St. John's, Newfoundland is a for-sure thing. They have a web site - scifiontherock.com - or try contact@scifiontherock.com.... As it looks now, it will be a 2 day affair on April 19th and April 20th. The Holiday Inn on Portugal Cove Road is the location, and that's about a 1o minute ride from the airport.....don't take the cabs that are ststioned at the airport - they often take passengers on a VERY roud-about way. Instead call a cab company named BUGDEN'S, or Co-Op taxi. They are honest. The hotel is about a 10-15 ride from downtown, and the infamous George Street...2 blocks with about 30 pubs... closed to autos in the evening, so stimbling into a Mack truck won't be happening. There are also more good places to eat and/or have coffee than there are in Halifax, although St. John's is about 1/2 the size. John Cabot sailed in through the 'narrows' (the entrance to the harbour - on June 24th, 1497, and Sir Humphrey Gilbert claimed it as the first colony of the British Empire in 1583.... If you decide to visit, check the Canadian weather a few days ahead go to theweathernetwork.com for reasonable forecasts. But be prepared for chilly nights no matter what they say. Take a ride up to Cabot Tower (if the day is clear) and have a look at the rugged coastline. You be able to see Cape Spear, which is the closest point in North America to Europe, and you'll understand why some people refer to Newfoundland as "the Rock". Cabot Tower stands atop a cliff that's about 350 feet above sea level.....and it's ALWAYS windy up there. Brian

LOve to see some familiar faces.. I know it is not going to be possible for many folks.... It ifeels SOO far, out of the way... ain't ! Many flights to and From Europe stop in St.John's..... Most of my friends know this.... I swear..... anyone on an overseas who chooses to abide for one of those nights, stays for free. Anyone who purchases more than $ 150 from me (Yep I got some new gems) stays for free..... "New gems" ?? Interesting... I'm seriously considering the trip... ;D

St John’s is well worth a visit - a convention is just one more reason to go there! And for those of us in Europe, it is a lot closer than anywhere else in North America.

Well, I can assure you , if you have enough time to look around , you'll have a time you'll never forget. Just remember, Newfoundland is 1/3 larger than Ireland.... it ain't a small place... St. John's is a small city, but it is not hard to get lost.... after all , the streets in the old downtown were first made 400 years ago by goats and cows... but at least if you go downhill, you'll find the harbour , and then you can start over. Or join a busker group. There are companies that offer tours of the city, but some are MUCH better than others..... cabs are cheap and there are many of them. BUGDENS is the best cab company - avoid a company called "City Wide" we used to call them 'convict cabs' ... Co-OP is OK....There is no 'best bar' I like the few remaining pubs - we call them taverns. If anyone wants to know where to go to eat, or to drink that is not included in the "CITY GUIDE" - a piece of trash- ask me....or take a stroll with me. brian

I have to say that there are more interesting places to eat and to buy great clothes are to have a great coffee in a very cool joint and more places to hear great music than any other place I have ever known.... not a surprise that the most popular shows on Canadian television were conceived and have been performed by Newfoundlanders .... a national journalist once refered to us as the "Newfoundland Mafia of entertainment" St. John's ain't just another city - look at the promos for Newfoundland.... it'll give you an idea of how we live. And what we love. yer humble bye brian

What do we do at these things? It varies depending on the convention. Most will have interviews with actors, a dealer’s room where you can buy merchandise, often a fancy dress competition/masquerade. games, viewing rooms, workshops… Some are based around one show, others cover a lot of shows. Some are huge (the first con I went to had 10,000 people, which was a little overwhelming), but this one looks like being a smaller, more intimate kind of event. Check out the website for more information about what’s happening: www.scifiontherock.comBest thing about conventions – meeting old friends, making new ones

babykitty78, I wouldn't worry too much about not meeting people in St. John's - it is hard NOT to meet people there. As anyone who has been there will tell you, Newfoundlanders are quite friendly. And people at conventions usually take care of each other. I'm sure you'll have absolutely NO trouble meeting Lexx fans, and they are THE BEST ! And if all else fails, I'll be happy to do what I can to introduce you to some people I know. The people organizing the convention are all volunteers, and volunteers are always the most friendly, since they are there because they WANT to be there, and will help you in every way they can. So, if you have the urge, don't hesitate ! Come and have fun !

30 isn't old LOL
More birthday candles = bigger cake ;D
I'm sure you'll have fun. Newfoundlanders are very friendly - I rang a tour operator there today, and we ended up chatting for nearly an hour!

thanks, Im so looking forward to this trip! Its going to be my last vacation as a twenty something- I turn 30 on april 23- and if I have to say goodbye to my youth I want to do it in a fun way! Would he be rude of me to mock and point at you turning 30 a few months before me? = P My 30th is in August, and I've got a family trip in Colorado in July - that's my last adventure for the 20s... and if I want to go to England next year, I need to carry over some vacation time... sorry, thinking out loud... which basically tells me I only dream of going up North. I was *this* close to UnCon 2001, but then my brother had to go and graduate high school the same weekend. Selfish git. = PPP Share pictures with a sorry fan like me? Let someone you don't know live vicariously through you? Fantasma *smiles wide with innocent eyes*

Well damn... Unless I hit the lottery between now and then it's really looking like I won't get to make the St. John's trip. With the US economy going straight down the toilet and one American dollar won't buy so much as 2 turds anywhere in the Dark Zone I'm going to have to stay here and miss out on all the fun Everyone take lots of pictures for me.
